I posted a video a while ago.
And it reminded me of an idea I had when I was in Australia. Getting people to invite homeless people for diner. So far it’s only in Dutch, but if there are enough people who would like to use the platform on an international base, I’ll make it into an English language based idea.
The plan is as followed. When there are 100 members I will go to the Salvation Army and the Z-magazine and share the idea. I will than together with them start spreading the idea among homeless people, get them profiles and start eating.
You can invite them to your home, but I would suggest to invite them out for diner, snackbar, fancy place, cool place. Whatever. Listen, share, learn, understand. As the name suggests, I’d like to bring people together. Helping others will benefit both the one you help and yourself. New experiences, new understandings and a general feeling of humanity will make you feel alive.
We all know the feeling of ‘walking on’ when passing a bum and when you don’t have time, you try not to look, try not to notice, but this voice in the back of your mind is like; “This is fucked up, how can this have happened?” That’s why Mankind is no Island is started.
Please spread the word. Please join and discover the other side of the coin.
Peace and Love.
Len
I’m in of course… but those this mean Irish people are narrow-minded?
It is a nice thing to do, but what about the ones with a mental illness or the ones who have become homeless for the reason of social exclusion?
The person who is participating in this cause could even come across as patronizing in the eyes of a person living on the street even if the volunteer has good intentions.
I think the idea is very strong in regards to listening and learning. I think the greater point is to spend time with them on the street or where ever they congregate.
