The thing is, some Americans get it, some don't. Don't forget that they grew up in an entertainment-vacuum. After the Vietnam war, the US started doing so well, with little real worries, that people just wanted to be entertained... and that's what TV gave them. Thousands of channels of 24/7 entertainment.

Maybe it's a little bit like a woman married to a bad man. The romance is over, the man abuses his wife on a regular base, yet the woman doesn't want to believe that the marriage is not working. So she pretends everything is alright - even at the risk of her husband killing her some day in a drunk rage.

I think people are subconsciously blinding themselves. Not just in the US, but also in Europe, because else we would have forced our governments to speak out against <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rogue-State-Guide-Worlds-Superpower/dp/1842778277/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252588213&sr=8-1" rel="nofollow">the US' foreign policies</a> ages ago.

We live in times where people think there's nothing strange about saying that we have to protect our freedom by jailing more people with ideas radically different from our own. In times where people think it's alright to go to war in the name of peace.

And some citizens of some nations seem to be better at this Orwellian mindplay, than others. Sadly, I think, the citizens who bare responsibility for the most powerful nation on this planet are particularly good at this.

Where did it all go wrong!
